I'm trying to decide which is more disturbing: A) that Victoria 'Posh Spice' Beckam keeps a blog, in which she reveals such insights as, "There are some gorgeous dresses being worn by Hollywood's finest," or B) that professional celebrity Paris Hilton and pornstar Jenna Jameson are collaborating on the television program called Virgin Territory. (Oh, it's a clever premise: They're going to be searching for "actual, live virgins" in LA and New York and documenting their attempts to get laid!) This is what drives our culture, sadly enough.
Actually, I think I'm going to go with C) that I'm aware of this crap at all.
They're poisoning our information supply.

I'm sorry, but I just opened my Web browser and on the Yahoo! homepage there are photos of Paris Hilton and Angelina Jolie with the caption, "Who looked best?" Neither woman looks particularly fetching in the photos, but let's get real: When the fuck has Paris Hilton looked like anything other than a whore? I mean, is that where we're at these days? Women want to look like whores? That's what we're aspiring to now? She's just a skanky fucking whore and she has no redeemable qualities whatsoever, but the media fucking love her.
Sometimes I really am ashamed to be a human being.

Christopher Reeve died this afternoon of heart failure.
Reeve was interviewed on NPR recently, and he mentioned then he had been close to death at three different points within the last year. I suppose I just assumed, like we all did, he would keep going until the day science finally caught up with his determination. He was Superman, after all. I'm genuinely saddened by his passing and while I couldn't claim to be a huge fan of his work as an actor, I've always been moved by his bravery.
I had some other things to write about after a long weekend in San Francisco, but I'm just terribly sad at the moment and even this is a chore.
Maybe tomorrow.
So long, Mr. Reeve.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Jennifer Garner. Kate Hudson. Britney Spears. Jennifer Lopez. Christina Aguilera. Paris Hilton. Jessica Simpson.
Kirstie Alley.
Lately, I'm becoming more and more disturbed by the seemingly endless procession of female celebrities plastered across the covers of "lifestyle" magazines like
People,
US,
In Touch, etc., each and every week. Lately, it's been Kirstie Alley, and she's either being pilloried for being a hideously overweight actress starring in the upcoming
Fat Actress or applauded for being a hideaously overweight actress starring in the upcoming
Fat Actress. I noticed a particularly unflattering photo of her on the cover of
The Globe whilst standing in a checkout line this past weekend and I was just disgusted. I mean, she's fat, I get it. But so are a lot of Americanswhat's the point of humiliating this woman on a weekly basis now that she's back in the public eye?
Kirstie aside, I just don't understand the appeal of these magazines. Who cares if Mary-Kate (or is it Ashley?) Olsen is a coke addict? I've known dozens of tragic, talentless beauties addicted to cocaine over the years, what makes
this one so special? I hate being confronted by images of these twin lollipops (I mean, really, their heads are way too fucking big for their stick-like bodies at this point...) and the patronizing headlines about Mary-Kate's addiction, her decision to go into rehab, her recovery, her reunion with her loving lookalike, her cretinous boyfried. Why does it matter? Who does this grotesque imitation of real life even appeal to?
And who cares who Jennifer Lopez is dating or whether she's losing weight or if Kate Hudson's relationship with Chris Robinson is on the rocks or whether Jessica Simpson is any dumber than the last time someone thougth it was relevant to check?
Finally, how is it that world class skank Paris Hilton is even magazine fodder at all? She's
literally (and I mean that in the literal sense of the word...) famous for fucking some guy on a home video! But the nation so outraged by Janet Jackson's Superbowl surprise is somehow more than comfortable with the fact Paris fucked and sucked her way onto TV and into a cushy gig as a Guess model. Her sister is even famousand she hasn't done
anything worthy of recognition beyond being rich...and related to Paris.
I ultimately don't care who these people are or what they do, but it bothers me they're celebrated to such a ridiculous degree. They're the worst pop culture has to offer, but the mainstream media love brainwashing readers into thinking otherwise. And for the most part, America defers to their warped view of reality. Bad is good, skanky is sexy, clueless is clever and hey, no one actually watches
Alias, but Jennifer Garner is a STAR and shame on you for suggesting otherwise.
Is it really too much to ask for people to just think for themselves?
